Emmanuel’s breath ran ragged through his chest. He stood, using his body as a shield for Sam, keeping himself between her and the vampire. The vampire that wasn’t supposed to be out in the sunlight. The vampire that was supposed to be a demon hell-bent on human destruction. But here he was, out in the sun, doing his best to get away without killing anyone. Sure, he’d thrown men off him. Sure, he’d attacked when attacked, but he wasn’t the vicious mindless killer Emmanuel had been expecting. It almost seemed like the vampire was trying not to kill anyone.
And then the female had burst onto the scene, seemingly appearing out of thin air, her hands on fire. Instead of launching herself at them, a slave to her bloodlust, she’d stopped. Begged them to let the male go.
The look on her face …
The sound in her voice …
Emmanuel thought of Sam. If she’d fallen, if he’d found her surrounded by the enemy, hurt and threatened, it would have torn a gaping hole in his chest. That’s what he saw on Claire’s face.
He shook his head. Best not to think of the vampire as having a name. It made her seem human when she wasn’t. And the concern on her face was sure to be an act. A ruse designed to pacify them, to deceive them. But to what end?
“Please,” she said. “No one has to die here.”
Alec guffawed. “So said the lion to the lamb.”
“If we meant you harm, this entire field of men would be dead by now.” She held out one hand as she spoke. The fire that crackled along its edges coalesced into a swirling ball, fused until it seemed dense. With a shuddering breath, she closed her fist and extinguished the fire.
“She waves the white flag,” Alec said to his Acolytes with a grand gesture of his hand. He shook his head and his voice grew hard. “Be on your guard.”
“What do you want? Why are you here?” The desperation on Claire’s face disquieted Emmanuel. He didn’t feel like a champion of God, cleansing the earth of some evil scourge. He felt like a bully, breaking into someone’s home and beating them up.
“I’m surprised to find you awake, let alone out in the sun,” Alec said, strutting back and forth along the line of his men. “How do you do it?”
Claire shook her head. To Emmanuel, she looked as if she might drop, whether from fear, or desperation, or exhaustion, he couldn’t quite tell.
“You see, that’s what we want,” said Alec. “We want information. We want to know you so that we can destroy you.” Alec hefted the stake in his hands and strode towards William. “Expose his heart,” he ordered.
“No!” Claire raised her hands and fire flared into existence. With a flick of her wrist, she sent a fireball streaming through the air. It struck the ground at Alec’s feet and ignited the grass. With a yelp, Alec hopped backwards.
“You bitch! Hell spawn! Expose his heart!” Alec growled at his men through clenched teeth, his green eyes flashing with rage.
